日本生まれ。3歳から14歳までグアム、ハワイで過ごす。
14歳でスカウトされ、82年「急いで！初恋」で歌手デビュー。
「夏色のナンシー」「PASSION 」などのヒット曲がある。
上智大学比較文化学部日本文化学科卒業。
特有の国際感覚とバイリンガルを活かし幅広く活躍。                                       
2018年にはデビュー35周年記念ベストアルバム
「Celebration」をリリース。収録曲の「恋のブギウギトレイン」は
国連の掲げる「SDGs（持続可能な開発目標）」のテーマ曲に起用された。
2022年にデビュー４０周年の記念アルバム、Affection~Yu Hayami 40th Anniversary Collection~を発売。
現在、NHK WORLD「Dining with the Chef」 、NHKラジオ「深夜便ビギナーズ」にレギュラー出演中。
２０２２年、デビュー４０周年を記念し、１０月にベストアルバムリリース。
芸能活動の傍ら、日本アロマ環境協会アロマテラピー検定1級を取得(2001)、日本ソムリエ協会認定ワインエキスパート資格(2008)、ZUMBA、及びAFAAインストラクター取得(2018)。2005年よりJCV世界のこどもにワクチンを日本委員会のスペシャルサポーターとしても活動。

Born in Japan, and raised in Honolulu, Yu’s bicultural background has enabled her to be active as an International artist. She has had a consistently successful career as a singer and actress since her debut in 1982.
She has a series of hit songs such as Natsuiro no Nancy and PASSION just to name a few.
In 2016 Koi no Boogie Oogie Train became the theme song for United Nation’s SDGs.
Celebrating her 40th debut anniversary, she released a compilation of all her singles in a 3-disc album, Affection~40th Anniversary~(2022)
She is also active as a musical theater actress, having performed in Les Miserables“(1999), Annie (2019), Christmas Carol (2022).
Yu continues to act on screen as well as loves to sing different genres such as J-POP, rock, disco, and jazz.

She is also deeply involved in charity work, where she has been a special supporter for JCV (Japan Committee, Vaccines for the World’s Children) since 2005.
